With only a few hours of instruction, you can learn how to produce, film and edit your own video. BITV provides a wide range of classes for both youth and adults who want

to learn how to tell a story using the latest technology in a supportive and fun filled atmosphere. All classes are taught by professionals and are offered in progression throughout the year so you can move from beginning to advanced at your own pace.

We invite you to browse through our class listings where you'll find something for everyone.

All classes require registration and prepayment. Classes taught by working professionals and/or Apple certified instructors. Scholarships may be available.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

ABOUT BITV -------------------------------------------------------------------

 

Orientation
Learn how your local community television works! Please come to this informational session to learn about the history of BITV, the relationship to the City of Bainbridge Island and Comcast, and the benefits of becoming a member. This orientation is required for all program producers and program sponsors. *Orientation is the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM, unless otherwise noted.
1 Hour Session • Course Fee: Free

JOURNALISM --------------------------------------------------------

 

SHOOTING
Spend the day learning how to shoot video like a pro. Our expert staff will teach you the techniques for videography in the fast paced world of television news. You will learn how to tell a story with just your footage. Different interviewing techniques will be covered as well as how to get the best shot and audio.
7 Hour Session • Course Fee: $140 Members, $175 for non- members and includes 1 yr. membership.

Prerequisite: Camera Training

 

 

WRITING
Writing for Television takes practice. Lean how to put urgency in your writing and take out what is bogging it down. This class will teach you how to get your point across in as little time as possible. Topics will include writing into a sound byte, teases, and journalistic practices. This class is all about powerful writing, which will help you in TV, Movies, the web, and beyond.
3 Hour Session • Course Fee: $75 Members, $95 for non- members

 

 

EDITING NEWS
Do you know the difference between a package and a vosot? How about a vo? You will be speaking the industry lingo by the time you are done with this class. More importantly you will be able to edit those news pieces. Topics include choosing sound bytes, timing video, and picking your shots.
3 Hour Session • Course Fee: $75 Members, $95 for non- members

Prerequisite: Final Cut Pro 1.

 

 

REPORTING
Take all three journalism classes listed above and become a certified reporter for our weekly news program. You will learn the proper way to shoot, write and edit a news story. Your class assignment will be putting together a segment of your choosing that will actually air on our news program.
3 Day Session • Course Fee: $240 Members, $300 for non- members

Prerequisite: Sony DSR 250 certification and Final Cut Pro 1.

 

BEGINNING CLASSES --------------------------------------------------------

Mac Basics
This class is designed to help users new to the MAC get acquainted with their computer, learn their way around the desktop and use preferences and settings. Students will also learn how to customize their Macs and become skilled at managing folders, saving, retrieving and organizing files, and finding anything with Spotlight and Finder. After attending this class, students will be comfortable with the basics and ready to discover the remarkable things they can do with a Mac. No experience necessary. Ages 12 and up.
4 Hour Session • Course Fee: $75, members $60

 

Moviemaking - Intro to Video Production

This is is a great class to get you started making videos. Through a project-based exercise you’ll learn how to start and complete a video production. You will learn about production, digital cameras, digital editing and finish a program that will air on BITV 12. Upon certification, you are entitled to use BITV cameras and iMacs for your next project. This class is one evening and one full day.

No previous experience necessary.Ages 12 and up.

Minimum 4, maximum 10 participants

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES --------------------------------------------------------

 

Mac Intermediate
Want to know more about Macs like peripherals, administration tools, user accounts, disc utility and repair. This is the next step to learning functionality and troubleshooting. Prerequisite: Mac basics.
3 Hour Session

Course Fee: $75, members $60

 

Live Studio Production
Learn the exciting world of “Live” television production through hands-on participation. You will learn how to set up and record a live television show in the BITV studio. We’ll show you how to switch multiple cameras, set up microphones and add graphics to your production. Ages 16 and up.

Prerequisite: Any BITV production class or previous experience

Minimum 4, maximum 10 participants
7 Hour Session • Course Fee: $95, free for members

 

Camera Training
BITV Camera Training is a hands-on tutorial designed around the Sony DSR-250 professional DV Camera. At the end of training you will understand how to operate the camera and know the necessities regarding sound and shot set-up. Upon completion you will be awarded Sony DSR-250 Certification, the ability to rent BITV’s Sony DSR-250 cameras and a FREE BITV membership after attending orientation! No experience necessary. Ages 16 and up.


3 Hour tutorial, 4 hour hands-on • Course Fee: $50 includes membership, free for members

 

FIELD PRODUCTION

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Learn how the pros shoot. This two-day intensive workshop will take you through the technical side of production. You’ll be on a crew learning responsibilities, protocol, and filmmaking techniques. This class teaches professional digital cameras techniques, location audio, and much more. Upon satisfactorily completing the workshop, participants are certified to use BITV’s professional equipment. Ages 16 and up.
2 Day Session • Course Fee: $250, members $200

Prerequisite: BITV camera class

 

Final Cut Pro I

In this introductory class, you’ll participate in hands-on exercises that will familiarize you with basic FCP editing including tools, trimming, transitions, audio, digitizing, and mastering to DVD. Every student learns on individual computers.Ages 12 and up.


Prerequisite: NonLinear Editing or Beginning Video
7 Hour Session • Course Fee: $150

 

ADVANCED CLASSES------------------------------------------------


Final Cut Pro II

This class gives editors a chance to dive deeper into professional editing. Students will learn applied editing, motion effects, key framing, color correction, audio design, project management and much more. Take your editing abilities to the next level, with Final Cut Pro II.
Prerequisite: Final Cut Pro I
7 Hour Session • Course Fee: $150, members $120

 

 

Advanced Lighting
Back by popular demand. Learn the aesthetic of film and video lighting. This class teaches pro lighting techniques with ARRI lights, reflectors and grip gear.Prerequisite: Any BITV production class. Ages 16 and up.
8 Hour Session • Course Fee: $150, members $120
