Scott Schmidt, Executive Director
scott@bitv.org
Scott brings many years of experience in television management,
production and publishing to BITV. He produced/directed TV
series for PBS and ESPN; programs for CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS and
cable, films and commercials, and numerous corporate, government,
retail and education programs. He initiated and directed a
television department for a leading international lifestyle
publisher and provided strategic leadership for a variety
of companies to invest in television.
Scott’s easily at home directing a film,
nurturing an organic vegetable garden, restoring an antique
motorcycle, designing and building a chair or an entire home,
casting for that elusive salmon, spending a day adrift on
the water, or preparing culinary treats for cast, crew and
friends.
Seeking adventure, Scott and his wife Ruth left their east
coast home in 1995 and landed on Bainbridge Island. Scott
looks forward to building relations with individuals, schools,
non profits and businesses to enhance this wonderful community.

Penny Millar, Community Outreach Coordinator
penny@bitv.org
Raised across the water in Ballard, Penny had dreams of working in television. With a degree in Speech Communications and minor in Sports Management from Washington State University, Penny set out to work in sports media. During a visit to Los Angeles, she fell in “awe” with the lights of Hollywood and found herself in the middle of a career in entertainment. While in Southern California, Penny interned at The Tonight Show, NBC ‘s publicity department, and worked at Buena Vista Television, talent management and a couple production companies in the L.A. area. After five years and various careers in the entertainment industry, she decided it was time for a change. Missing her family and hometown, she knew it was time to return to the Pacific Northwest. She started working in marketing at Princess Cruise Lines, and up until recently, The Associated Press. Missing the excitement and challenge of television, she knew it was time to go back into the field. Combining her love for TV and community, Penny finally found the perfect fit at Bainbridge Island Television!
Penny can assist you with classes, volunteering, membership and general information about the organization.
Penny resides in Suquamish with her fiancé Will, cat Charlie and chocolate labs Coco and Bart. When she’s not busy at work she can be found taking road trips, cheering on her Seattle Sonics or planning her upcoming wedding.

Selina Shearer, News Director
selina@bitv.org
Selina Shearer hails from off the island… but don’t hold that against her. She grew up close enough, in Belfair. After deciding in high school that TV news was the job for her, she held down three news internships in Seattle while attending the University of Washington. Her Sophomore year she decided a degree in communications just wouldn’t cut it, so she packed up and moved to Arizona, where she attended the number one broadcast journalism school in the nation. While at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism she was the news anchor for a campus of more than 50 thousand students.
After receiving a Degree in Journalism to frame and display on her wall she high-tailed it to Europe for a little vacation. As she turned on her phone in the airport after a month abroad she had two messages for job offers in Eastern Washington. Selina spent three years in the Tri-Cities as a reporter, anchor and producer. She covered everything from the wine harvest to behind the scenes at Hanford. Her favorite story was when the Richland Bomb Squad let her blow up a truck. Selina is now settled on the island with her parents, the mountains, and the saltwater close by. Who could ask for anything more?

Neal Shaffer, Intern
Neal is a student at Bainbridge High School. When Neal showed up at BITV, with an application in hand, it took a little less then two minutes for the staff to welcome him as an intern. He says: “The experience I am getting now is one that most people will never get. I know it will help give me a jump start in the video industry.”
Neal sees with one eye behind the metaphorical lens. He has directed and shot several short films and always has an idea for a new project.
He has traveled in North, Central, and South America. Neal enjoys snowboarding, and spending a day, doing just about anything, in the sun. |

Austin Ferguson, Intern
They call me #2…
My name is Austin, I’m a junior at BHS. When I’m not here at the station, you can usually find me out on the lacrosse field, or at the beach, skimboarding, with my friends. I really love to watch films, and got really interested in making them as well. That’s when my buddy Neal (scroll above for details.) got me introduced to the wonderful staff here at BITV. It’s taught me a lot on what it really takes to excel in shooting, editing, and producing. |
